Palcomix has some great art at times but then it just all goes wrong. GI Joe Sigma one they did was good, because it got the look of the characters right, but most of the stuff is just kind of dull in a way.

Actually, I think the correct term would be "fucked him"... not like she would, Misato used the promise of sex simply to try and comfort Shinji or make him play around to stay with her.

I don't think Shinji ever really looked at Misato that way, and was in fact throughly bewildered when she attempted to frame the relationship in such terms in EOE. His rejection of her in ep23 is more about his desire to be left alone than because he somehow guesses her (likely only subconscious) sexual intentions.

Asuka steals shinji's attention from Rei only when she's both right in front of him and either acting up or unconciously vulnerable. Even after the kiss (which Shinji seems to blow off as just more teasing from Asuka), he's seen looking at Rei's empty desk while Asuka looks at him... a powerful statement of where things stand among the pilots. It's true her behavior drives him away, but this change happens during his month in lcl, not after 14... it just takes him that long to notice.

As far as Rei pondering goes, I think Shinji was more curious than smitten. He stayed curious and wanted to look out for her, but the weirdness kept him at bay until the truth was revealed (not all of it though... I'm not sure if he ever consciously realized who she was a clone of) and he freaked the hell out. Quite sensible, really.

In conclusion, I think Shinji was closer to Misato than either of the other girls and though he certainly harbored some good 'ol fashioned teenage lust he had no truely romantic feelings towards any of them.

On the one hand, it's no crazier than giant flesh-and-blood pseudo-robots that need extension cords and change size whenever the camera isn't on them to be whatever will look coolest in the next scene. It's no crazier than gigantic alien kaiju that can't be harmed by H-bombs but which die when a giant robot punches them in the face. It's no crazier than any of the other technobabble in Eva.

On the other hand, all but one of the ones I've seen so far has been written as a Shinji x Misato romance, possibly as a way around the age difference that squicks some people. I personally think they work well enough together that a good author can tell a good SxM romance story without resorting to any of this distracting let's-use-the-Phlebotinium-Ray-to-make-her-suddenly-a-teenager-again stuff, which carries significant plot implications that get ignored.
