One of these days I'm going to get around to starting my life and times of Gendo fic. I actually kinda like the guy, jerkass though he is.

While I would probably lack any fondness for a man of his action in real life, I don't think he was placed in NGE to be solely a target of loathing, as he often is.

He was kind of messed up from the start, but I surmise it's the "loss" of Yui that really twisted him. I tend to give pre-2004/5 Gendo the benefit of the doubt.

Both of the ideas you have stated have been done to death.
As far as non-evil Gendo, there have been plenty of those.
The CoaEG Gendo slowly deteriorated into a good guy, before Redemption Equals Death kicked in.
Then there's Taking Sights, which has Gendo sent back to the past to fix what went wrong, and prove himself to be an utterly ineffectual good guy.

You're really not picking up on the whole alternate universe vibe, are you? We might be gneder opposites, but our different upbringings have brought about differences. Shinjiko was pretty much abandoned to one of her mother's relatives, but went through more of an independence stage. It took some serious convincing before Shinjiko was willing to give our commander the time of day. I was raised under an intensive prodigy program that saw combat three years before that Over The Rainbow incident. You should know that there are several more differences between our worlds. Although our origins are similar, the commander from our world believed it would be beneficial to everyone if my existence wasn't so isolated. I was raised under the prodigy program and military school throughout my childhood. I might still be socially repressed, but not to the extent of my counterpart. Another difference would be that the Second Child holds the highest kill count amongst us, but mostly because Shinjiko takes great pleasure in dismembering and torturing her opponents. Sohryu always needed to step in and provide mercy killings before the angels self-destructed.

From the general tone of the posts, their varying leanings in regard to transgender shipping, and differing levels of regard to the core rules of improv in this particular thread, I would guess that at least four, but possibly as many as six people participated in this thread.
The "Asuka" posts in particular have some noticeable marks of trading users towards the middle before reverting to the originator.
The HAL impersonation is most likely the sole post of that poster, and the sudden shift in tone and spike in hostility suggests that the Oskar poster is someone new entirely.
