I don't think it does. the genderswap Shinji idea is out there mostly for the strong resemblance she has to Shinji and irony of the situation. The fact that it would sort of make Mari/Shinji a trap is just a added bonus.

A guy named Slayer over at Darkscribes did a halfway decent NGE/Oh My Goddess crossover once. It started out okay, but then he started throwing in a bunch of other series into it too, and it all went downhill. Now his stories focus almost totally on his own ACCs, and the original characters are relegated to cameos, if they're mentioned at all.

The EVA/SG1 crossover was, surprisingly, actually quite good.

Again, surprisingly, so was the EVA/Firefly crossover (who'd thunk that that would work out?)
